Ramakrishna Mission has been working in the field of education for over 100 years with a special focus on value education. The Awakened Citizen program (ACP) initiated by Ramakrishna Mission in 2014 is a three year graded value education for students of middle school classes developed by Ramakrishna Mission, Delhi, with the help of reputed experts. This was formally launched nationwide by the then Union Minister of Human Resource & Development Smt. Smriti Irani on 14th Feb 2015. The program is completely secular without any religious overtones. The entire program is based on Swami Vivekananda’s revolutionary idea that “Education is the manifestation of perfection already in man”. This means that each human being has infinite strength, potential, and possibilities latent in them. All these can be manifested as excellence in every walk of life.
The teaching methodologies and curriculum framework have been carefully designed to enable a deep and enduring transformation in children. Through various explorations, situation analyses, discussions and real life examples, the students discover the tremendous impact of manifesting these possibilities and the means to do so. The aim of the program is to empower students in a real and tangible way and help them develop as self-sufficient citizens. Such students will not only do well for themselves but will also have the larger interest of the society at heart.
The first stage involves orientation programmes for the school principals (management) as they need to understand the unique approach of this program. This is followed by a 2-day workshops for teachers in each of the three consecutive years, which is conducted free of cost. The ACP resource persons then visit the schools to support the trained teachers in the implementation of the program.
The program is currently running in over 3600 schools across the nation. Over 11000 teachers have been trained to act as facilitators of the program in schools. An estimated 4,50,000 school children have been covered under this program. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti are running this program in their schools throughout the country. CBSE has recommended schools across the country to implement this program. Government schools in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have also implemented the program in their schools. Private schools are also running the program successfully.
The program has received highly encouraging feedback from students, teachers and parents. Increased self-confidence, improvement in academics, better relations with teachers, treating people of lower social standing with respect and living harmoniously with others are some of the areas where significant impact on the students have been observed.
