Vision for education reform: The State has managed to make primary schooling accessible to all children including the first generation learners, the hard to reach segments and the most under served. Given this reality in the state, the policies of the School Education Department would now be reoriented : To meet the challenge of equity, retention and building system accountability. To ensure that prejudice or privilege do not impact the students access to an excellent education. To focus on offering guidance to our students to help them achieve the requisite skills to problem solve the 21st century challenges.
Support required: The state has organized the state level NGO CSR workshop in the month of January 2018 to indicate its areas of need in terms of technical and financial assistance so that the NGOs and CSR Organizations may come forward to contribute towards certain projects that align with their interests and areas of intervention.
Strengths in the education sector:
  • With the targeted efforts of the School Education Department the elusive goal of Universalization of Elementary Education has now become a glorious reality in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu was one of the earliest adopters of child centric pedagogy at the primary and upper primary level which aims to transform the classroom into a vibrant and active space for young learners. Tamil Nadu was the only state with 100 percent of the Govt and Govt Aided schools participating in the Swachh Vidhyalaya Puraskar. It also ranked among the top 3 states in the country for the maximum number of national level awards for green schools. The Government provides laptops to every student of class XII in Tamil Nadu making technology accessible and opening the world of technology based opportunities to them.
Areas of development in the education sector:
  • To radically overhaul the in-service teacher development programmes to bring improvement in classroom transaction through emphasis on understanding the curriculum, pedagogic practices and achievement of basic and higher order learning skills among students. To sensitize teachers towards the social, emotional and cognitive needs of children from the marginalized sections and creating capacity to cater to students remedial needs. To implement technology infrastructure in schools guided by a range of coherent, integrated and comprehensive strategies with clearly defined goals to measure progress. To create monitoring structures for social audit and online monitoring of school system. To empower parents and students as stakeholders in the system by creating avenues for them to engage in a meaningful and systematic fashion with the schooling system. To equip teachers with technological skills that reduce the time spent on non-curricular or clerical tasks.
