Problem statement : In the year 2016 the pass percentage for tribal students in the Meghalaya Board of School Education,Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination was merely 51.25 percent and 53.42 percent for male and female students respectively. Even though the success rates at higher secondary level appear slightly better, the figures are still significant if one considers the screening done to ensure only the fittest candidates sit for the final board exams.
Proposed solution : Apart from the MBOSE results, the analysis of teacher feedback during RMSA training programmes has also highlighted the need to rethink the content of current teacher training modules. In fact there is a felt need to complement the current subject specific teacher training programmes under RMSA with a ‘learning to learn’ module for teachers. Currently, in most schools the emphasis is on what students need to learn, whereas there is little emphasis on training students on how they should go about learning the content and what skills will promote efficient studying to support deeper understanding and learning. Teaching students how to learn is as important as teaching them content, because acquiring both the right learning strategies and background knowledge is important for promoting lifelong learning.
