Key success indicators : i. Capacities of teachers of the targeted schools to help children choose relevant books, do book reviews, book talks and develop interest in reading. ii. Increase in competency of children in using computers for working on projects and develop 21st century skills viz. team work, research skills, communication. iii. Functional resource center being used by DIET faculty to educate the teachers.
Problem statement : The projects are being implemented at Okhamandal block, which is considered one of the backward blocks under SSA. Tata Trusts through its associate organization- Coastal Salinity Prevention Cell has been implementing remedial education programs and strengthening of Early Childhood Education at anganwadis and these three interventions are aimed at bringing further convergence of good practices in the same intervention schools. Description: i. The component on library enabling involves capacity building of government school teachers on various aspects pertaining to notions around children’s literature, how is it distinct from adult literature, its role in literacy as well as socio emotional development of children, selection of suitable books, amongst other aspects. Post the training, teachers have been provided a collection of books for their schools and are being supported to introduce various activities in their class during the library period. During the project phase they are also being supported in the classroom so that these components can be implemented well. ii. As part of the component on ITE, children would work on authentic projects which will involve usage of computers for data search, data analysis, interpretation and thereafter presentation. This will not only help them develop skills of using computers but also develop their higher order skills. As children demonstrate these capacities, teacher capacity would be enhanced through specific training interventions and they would also be in a position to use computers for developing higher order skills of students. iii. As part of the component on setting up of resource center at the block level, a resource center would be created at DIET Jamnagar and it would have three sections on language, Maths and Science for elementary grades. The teachers who are doing their pre service as well as in service programs would also be trained on using this resource center for improving the effectiveness of their teaching capacity.
Proposed solution : i. All the schools in the intervention region have books. However, the libraries in many of the schools were not adequately used by teachers as they haven’t received specific inputs on the role of children’s literature in their overall development. ii. Many of the schools have computers. However the teachers are yet to tap onto the available facilities to build the capacities of students. There are also issues in terms of how computers are introduced. The program –‘Integrating technology with education’ is aimed at coming up with authentic learning experiences for students in the form of projects, which requires them to use computers and also develop higher order capacities like research skills, team work, structured writing and communication iii. There is a need to introduce teachers (at both pre service as well as at in service levels) to a variety of resource material which go beyond books and could be of help to them in designing suitable learning experiences in the classrooms. The intervention proposes to set up a teacher resource center at DIET Jamnagar.
