Key success indicators : 1. Increased access of the students to quality reading material. 2. Improved school environment to support development of reading habits 3. Enhanced capacity of teachers to encourage habit of reading 4. Increased community and family awareness and support for reading
Problem statement : The school library is integral to the teaching and learning process. The school library facilitates the work of the classroom teacher and ensures each student has equitable access to resources, irrespective of home opportunities or constraints. Books being the number one source of knowledge are often the key to literacy. It is even said that a man is what he reads and thus, having a library in the school helps us mold the kids in a much better way. Books and hence, libraries keep the kids grounded, well-read, knowledgeable and eager to learn more. While the role of the school library remains constant, its design, digital platform, strategies and tools change as pedagogy and technology changes. Room To Read in collaboration with Adani CSR has initiated setting up interactive libraries in schools of Gujarat. The aim of the initiative is to develop literacy skills and enhance reading ability among the children.
Proposed solution : Problems: • Lack of funding also affected the resources in the library • Outdated structure of library needs to change to play a pivotal role in promoting literacy and learning Solutions: • To develop libraries as one component of larger Literacy Program • Transforming government primary schools into comprehensive learning environments that enable children to develop the skills and habit of reading and become life long, independent readers. • Providing schools with the resources necessary to establish a child friendly library Enlisting the community to co-invest to ensure long term sustainability of that library Building the capacity of teachers to manage the library and conduct reading activities for students • Providing three years of ongoing monitoring and support to schools
