Key success indicators : Literacy Program 1. Children in demonstration schools are able to read with fluency and comprehension by the end of grade 2 and are able to regularly read books at school and at home 2. Increased access to quality reading materials. 3. Improved school environment physical that supports the development of reading skills and a habit of reading 4. Increased effectiveness of teachers to teach early literacy skills and encourage the habit of reading.
Problem statement : Room to Read believes that world change starts with educated children. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world. Of the many aspects of quality education, Room to Read has identified and committed to two critical areas of educational development where we believe we can have the greatest impact a. literacy b. girls education. The goal of Room to Reads literacy program is to ensure that more primary school children become independent readers, whereas goal of girls education program is to enable girls to complete secondary schooling and have the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read India and Rajya Shiksha Kendra Madhya Pradesh are jointly implementing Literacy program under the MoU signed on 26th September 2017.
Proposed solution : Given that reading is the foundation for all academic learning, low reading levels have a cataclysmic effect on the entire education system. The immediate challenge for the public education system in India is therefore to ensure that children are able to read fluently at their grade levels. Reading skills will help a child access the rest of the curriculum and empower them to be lifelong learners. Proposed Solution Focus on both reading skills and reading habit in order to improve reading outcomes among children. RtRs experience is that children can only benefit from a school library in meaningful ways if they have the skills to read, and children can only maintain and consolidate their reading skills if they have accessto appropriate reading materials and have time to read in a supportive learning environment that promotes a habit of reading. Each of these two components of literacy - reading skills and reading habit - is dependent on the other. A mutually supportive relationship between reading habits and reading skills is needed to help children become lifelong, independent readers both must be supported together in the same schools with the same children.
