Key success indicators : 1. Observed use of provided TLMs at school levels measured with periodic monitoring at school level using technology solutions 2. Improvement of math learning outcomes measured by tab-based assessments and year on year improvement in NAS results in districts where GKA will be implemented 3. Increased community/parent awareness and involvement in childrens learning.
Problem statement : A tripartite MoU has been signed between Department of School & Mass Education, Odisha, Akshara Foundation and Kusuma Foundation for implementing the Odisha Learning Partnership, aimed at Improvements in the Quality of Education in Government Schools of Odisha. Under this, Ganitha Kalika Andolana(GKA), a programme designed by Akshara Foundation and aimed at bringing mathematics proficiency for children in Class 1-5 is being implemented in the districts of Balangir & Rayagada. Current target outreach is 4184 govt. primary schools and 2,47,000 children. It is being implemented by provisioning mathematics Teaching Learning Materials (TLM) to schools, providing training and support to teachers, engagement with parents and community and investing in technology to track programme implementation and learning outcomes. The proposed plan is ti scale it up to 8 more districts with a cumulative expanded outreach to 10 districts, 17,282 schools and 10,26,636 children. GKA has been implemented in Karnataka as well, reaching 12 districts, 11,000 schools and 6,00,000 children.
Proposed solution : Research evidence shows primary(classes I-V) school teachers and children lack clarity in concrete mathematical concepts. Proposed Solution- As per the constructivist perspective of NCF 2005, learners actively construct their own knowledge by connecting new ideas to existing ideas on the basis of materials & activities presented to them. NCF also suggests strategies for promoting learning by all. GKA aims to achieve this with following solutions- 1. Provisioning of Teaching and learning Materials (TLM) to every school and training teachers. The focus of teacher training is to enable them to facilitate student learning progressing as- (C)oncrete mathematical understanding with help of TLMs, (R)epresent mathematical understanding on paper and Converge their understanding to the (A)bstract form of mathematics. The entire learning cycle of C-R-A is facilitated through group learning and CCE. 2. Use of smart technological solutions for monitoring of programme implementation as well as for children assessment and provide fast feedback to teachers and other stakeholders. 3. Empowering parents and community to be a part of children learning process.
